With memories of the 1985 8.1 quake still fresh in peoples minds people fled buildings and swaying high-rises in Mexico city for today’s 6.7 magnitude earthquake. Todays quake was smaller, inland and relatively deep and so much less damage is expected from this one.
The quake was 64 KM deep and so in the subducted crust of the pacific plate under the North American plate and that damaging energy has a lot more area to disipate over, is less focused and dampened by the depth. While there may be some localized damage directly over the epicenter we expect that it will be a lot less damaging than the 1985 event. And with the experience gained from that earlier quake buildings in Mexico have been built better and would survive more than this one.
