A 6.0 is not big news in Peru or Indonesia or japan but a 6.0 only 5 km deep in the fertile deltas in northern Italy is a disaster. Buildings are collapsed, people killed, major damage to all infrastructure.
The main issues here are depth and materials. Depth because the quake is so shallow and so more movement is transferred to the surface. Materials in the ground and used for building contribute to building collapse. And if you are in the building it’s the building that kills you.
Our hearts go out for the people of Italy, and hope that they speed up their efforts to quake proof their historical buildings.
